Trailer of 왕의 남자 & small glimpses of the movie
Gosh, i noe there r people who dun understand the story, it's ok la. i understand. Hahaha..Ya, got the time to get holed up in the online library reading some chinese articles. Came across one called "燕山君日记" which means Diary of King Yonsan. Which is the King in focus for this movie. It's actually in written in Ancient Chinese (文言文), so it was DAMN hard to understand(Koreans in the past who are nobles or part of th royal family writes chinese just like our china ancestors. only the poor and uneducated population writes the current Hanguel, which is the current Korean writing) nonetheless, still can understand a bit la...
King Yonsan is actually a pretty sad king la. His mum, Concubine Yin was made Empress because Yonsan was chosen as the future king when he was 7 years old. However, too much rivalry, and within 2 years, Yin was stripped of her status as Empress and placed into what the chinese call "冷宫" - the Cold Palace where concubines who have lost favour stays and wait for death to arrive. Yin was poisoned by the Emperor when Yonsan was 9 years old, and this tragedy only brought about a bigger one to the Chosan Dynasty when Yonsan grows up. Yonsan grew up with hatred for his father's women, for he believe they were the ones who caused his mum's death. He became King officially at 19(dunno whether i rem correctly anot). A warped King i would say.
The period of his reign was one most koreans do not wish to speak of. Medical ladies were made into prositutes, temples were pulled down to build brothels(he did this only after burying his mother, which until now, no historians know why he did it coz he's supposed to be a devoted Buddhist like his mum),punishments were made brutal(for eg. burning of limbs, crushing of chest)...basically this King contributed nothing to the nation except contributing new methods of brutalising human beings and ya, building more brothels which were meant to serve him.
When he was officially king, the first thing he did was to have a Buddhist burial ceremony done for his mother(who was a devoted Buddhist). However, Chosan dynasty was a dynasty ruled by Confucianism, so all officials were against the Buddhist rituals. And guess what Yonsan did? He killed ALL his court officials who objected to his request. And the trailer part where King Yonsan was watching Gong Gil performing the scene of a concubine drinking poison, he got reminded of his mum. He killed all his father's concubines and drove his grandma to death the same night.
6 min analysis of 왕의 남자 with chinese subtitles
And surprise surprise, the beautiful clown, Gong Gil, did exist. His name is also Gong Gil and has beauty of a little girl(that's wat been written in the book). According to the Diary of King Yonsan, Gong Gil was only 16 when he entered the palace(Gong Gil was the first jester made to stay in the palace permanently). He was actually a child of a prostitute but was abandoned at a tender age. He met Chang Sang(the other manly clown) on the streets and they grew up together as street performers.
King Yonsan mentioned quite a few times of Gong Gil in his diary and henceforth, the production of this very mind-blasting movie. The actual ending for Gong Gil was: the money and attention from the King only made Gong Gil want to stay in the Palace longer instead of starving on the streets wif Chang Sang(who insist on leaving). However, after Chang Sang died in the palace, Gong Gil finally realised his greed and committed suicide in the end. In the movie, it was almost the same la, just that hs suicide attempt did not succeed. not sure wat's the movie ending, coz haven watch ma!5 min glimpse of the movie with chinese subtitles
