Good Saturday

Had an amazing Saturday hanging out with the JC friends and celebrating Shiyuan's birthday over at Zeffir with some seriously good and authentic Russian/Uzbekistan food. Who would have expected such good food in this little hole in the wall in Little India? I sure didn't. Haha. The Borsch soup was rich and is one of the must-trys. I like how cozy and homely the setting is, perfect for small gatherings (the whole place takes about less than 30 people I think). Do try the Kompot (home-made drink made from apple, plums and grapes) and Shashliks too!

I would recommend going with a group of friends so you can order a variety of food to share! :)

Headed off to Tom's Palette for some home-made ice cream thereafter and we managed to embarrass Shiyuan (and ourselves of course) by singing him a birthday song. If you haven't tried their ice cream, you should. It's creamy and extremely flavorful. Not forgetting they have a variety of flavors that you can't find in most cookie-cutter ice cream outlets, like salted egg yolk and and chocolate stout. There's also a workshop you can sign up to make your own ice cream! Students from all local universities get 10% off ;)

This is already the 11th year we are celebrating each other's birthdays. I feel old just thinking about it. Hahaha. It's been an incredible journey for all of us, slogging through A levels, University, overseas stints, work life, love and marriages together. We have been with each other through all the major milestones in each other's lives. It's not an easy feat and I'm glad we are still going strong :)

Cedric will be heading off to Ohio really soon (for his PhD) after his wedding in 2 weeks time. Christmas visiting plans are in the works already! Hahaha. Wendy's plans to study/further her career in Australia is also starting to take shape as well (after her house arrive in September). Jiahui got rid of his crazy boss and is moving on to greener pastures in a month's time. Jonathan's prepping for his wedding too. My new manager is coming in next week and hopefully things will progress for the better in office as well ;) I love how well everything is going for all of us :)))

I ended the night at The Coastal Settlement (gotta go back and try their brunch one of these days). Kenneth came back from Hong Kong for the weekend and we had a hell of a time discussing about his new cafe idea and Kelvin's upcoming stag night in Bangkok (again!). Miss these folks so much lahhh.

Life has been good so far. A lot to give thanks for :) Have a great Sunday everyone :)

Happy Three Friends 2012

Was cleaning up my SD card for the upcoming Tianjin trip and chanced upon these shots from August. It was the August trio's birthday gathering at 112 Katong.

I can't believe we are already a decade into our friendship and all of us are still going strong! Well except for Alan who fell off the face of the earth ever since he got married. Hahaha.

August babies: Cedric, HoTY and Jon. Both Cedric and Jon are getting married next year. The boys are growing up so fast! Hahaha

It's hard to imagine what JC life would have been like without them. With all that mugging and band practices, we were pretty much all we had, to tide each other through endless tutorials, lectures and never-ending hours in the band room.

Happy Birthday boys! Cheers to 10 years of friendship and many many more to come :)

Saveur

After hearing many raves about it, we decided our next class gathering had to be at Saveur! And so we did :)

I love how simple and minimal the interiors are. It was soooooo crowded the day we went but we got really lucky and we waited for only around 15 minutes!

Saveur is really a great place if you want some affordable and super delicious French food. I've never really had French food but if they taste as good as Saveur's, that cuisine has sure got a new fan here! ;-)

Their menu is really fuss-free and to the point. Most reviews talk about the Confit of Duck which tasted super awesome! So is the confit of salon..and the crispy pork belly and.... basically everything else we ordered. Hahaha.

Pasta Starter: Angel Hair Pasta with minced pork and sakura ebi:

Paste Starter: Angel Hair with Tiger Prawns and Cavier:

Starter: Confit of Salmon with Apple and Fennel Salad. This.is.to.die.for! I had 2 servings of it. It was really soft like sashimi and tasted oh so divine.

Starter: Foie Gras, which everyone had except me. Hahaha

Zenna's main: Crispy Pork Belly with poached egg:

Jacqueline and her main: Pan Fried Beef Tenderloin with Carrot Puree and Potato Gratin. The gratin was to die for too.....

My main: Barramundi with Crab Potato and French Bean:

I am clearly no food critic/reviewer because I can't even begin to describe how good the dishes were. Hahaha. I finished everything and ate some additional portions from others. That should tell you how good the food is. Hurhur ;-)

No gathering is complete without some good wine :) We had a a 1985 vintage red wine (ok clearly I'm referring to the wine and NOT the group of us whom shared the same birth year.. Hahahaha) which was a little too smooth:

A 1993:

1 bottle of Moscato (no the bottle isn't in this picture). It was so sweet! Would have tasted better if it was thoroughly chilled :)

Jillene's birthday lands on the following day so we decided to celebrate it in advance. The backstory was that we planned it as a surprise but Yunwen mentioned it by accident over our Group Whatsapp chat and...so it wasn't a surprise anymore. Hahaha.

She was nice enough to fake some surprised expressions for us. Hahaha!

Once our class chairman, will always be our chairman. That's Zenna dividing the cake ;-) And erm me smiling on. Hahaha

It's always so fun to meet up these girls! :) I seriously can't wait for our next gathering in December which will be at La Cantine! (Well because Jac knows the Michelin star chef, Bruno, over there that's why we are heading over ;) )

From left: Peipei, Wen Ling, Jillene, Me, Zenna
On Right from lady in red: Julia, Jacqueline, Alicia, Jiayan

Meanwhile, just what Zenna mentioned in her toast: May all of us stay forever young, fun, happy! May careers continue to soar for all of us. Most importantly, great health and awesome love for all! :))

Dinner at Loola's

So the gang met up for dinner at Loola's (Esplanade) on Sunday night. Always trust the boys to find new awesome food places for birthday gatherings ;-)

I wouldn't say the food is exceptional (judging by price tag that is haha, none of the mains were below $25 if I remember correctly). Haha.  I think their all-day breakfast menu is most value for money hurhur (definitely not egg benny if you are not a veggie lover).

I had pan-seared pork belly. It's really good! It was a little meat overload for me though. I could really do with more carbs on my plate..

I would go back again, but for all day breakfast the next time round. Hurhur.

Turning 26

And so another year whizzed by and I've crossed over the wrong side of my 20s.

BAHHHH I'm no longer in my early 20s :( Hahahaha.

One year older. One year wiser. A few more steps closer to know what I want in life. A few more lessons learned about life.

I learnt that:
...I'll not always be loved by my superiors and that there are nasty ones out there who will not watch my back for me.
...there are people out there who wants to put you down. Even if it means going out of their way to do it.
...I'm not all formidable and the ever-sunshine everyone thought I was.
...despite me having the mega ego that I'm awesome - I can have my morale and confidence all torn apart.

More importantly, I learned that:
...it's okay to cry and tell yourself "don't worry, rest today and try again tomorrow".
...somethings are really not meant to be held on.
...I should never let anyone tell me how lousy I am.
...there are many people (if you care to find) who wants to be there, to love and support you.
...my family do love me a lot more than I thought.
...at the end of the day, holding love and forgiveness in your heart is truly more rewarding.
...the world is huge and gorgeous. And thanks to my previous work, I experienced what it is like to live a life out of a suitcase.
...I could finish half marathon and not die

Above all, I learnt there's a someone (who's neither family nor BFFs for the last decade or more) who loves me more than I love myself (rather impossible if you ask my close pals about how narcissistic I am. Ha!). Thanks B for the wonderful celebration at Prive @ Keppel Bay and the fun throughout the day :) I'll let you know what I want for my birthday soon lah! :D

For the 26 year-old Yu*Hui, I wish for you to stay positive, stay passionate about the things you do, stay true to yourself, love the ones who truly cares and heck the ones who doesn't matter. Drown out the voices of naysayers and most importantly, live the life true to your heart and not the one someone else wants you to.

Cheers to another awesome year ahead :)

And Daniel turns 26!

Super backdated post but..

One year nearer to retirement!!! :))))

Happy Three Friends

We celebrated Tzih Yih's, Jonathan's and Cedric's birthday yesterday, happy birthday boys!:

Cheers to 7 years of friendship and more!!!! ;)

Domokun

I can't believe Alan made this stuff toy himself. (It was for Shiyuan's birthday):

Alan! I'm still very impressed!
So can I have an Elmo on my birthday?
LOL

On a side note, my eyebags are so big, my eyes have shrunk =((
I need to sleep more and work less.
And my face is so round!! I need to stop eating!! I need to exercise more and eat less.
I just want to say....Cheers to 7 years of friendship!!!

I'm not talking sense. Hahaha

Thanks sister =D

The blog entry says it all

Thanks everyone =)))

Today was a sweet 23rd birthday. =D Or as what I said during my cake cutting session, this is my 6th 18th birthday. HAHAHA

I woke up to a barrage of messages on my phone. My dad bought me my favourite porridge for breakfast. I went to work in a rosy mood and was greeted by A*mrita's and S*wati's birthday greetings.

Other greetings came along as people started to fill up the office because C*hristine and J*ulie drew "Happy Birthday Yu Hui!" on the board near the pantry:

V*ikram: "Hey morning! Happy Birthday!"

K*athrin: "Happy Birthday!"

Me: "Thanks!"

V*ikram: "So any parties tonight?"

Me: "No. My family celebrated the lunar one, so that was 2 weeks ago. And I don't really entertain dinners on weekday nights. I'm partying on weekends *grinz*"

V*ikram: "You are starting to become really American."

Me: "HAHAHA, no I kinda like to sleep well and wake up the next day fresh for work."\

V*ikram and K*athrin exchange glances.

K*athrin: "What did you do to her?"

V*ikram: "Don't look at me! Ok...we gotta do something about that.."

Me: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!"

Lunch was V*ikram's treat and I was free to choose whichever restaurant I wanted to eat at. We had lunch at a Shanghainese restaurant and the food was superb! We talked about all kinda things ranging from work to video games and weird cultures and destinations. V*ikram left early for a conference call and the remaining 3 (me, K*athrin and C*hristine) of us stayed in the restaurant to finish the desserts.

We went back and got back to work - with people stopping by my desk to drop chocolates and wishing me Happy Birthday as well. Thanks everyone! =))))

It turned out the surprise did not end. I think my manager (who is on business trip to Shanghai) ordered a cake for me before she left. And while everyone was preparing in the pantry, I was still in a call with the Director of Revenue Management in China Xiamen.

To be honest, I did not expect it at all, just wondering why the office became so empty all of a sudden. Even V*ikram wasn't in his room. I disappeared from my desk and K*athrin had to come to the toilet to find me because everyone was waiting! =S

Preparation in progress:

K*athrin was good in capturing my attention and kept talking to me until I reach the pantry, and suddenly the whole office burst into "Happy Birthday' song.

I was honestly shocked (VP - lady in blue):

I said my thank-yous and cut the cake:

Yes the one in blue behind me is my funky boss, V*ikram.
V*ikram: "Quickly cut the cake!"
Me: "I'm really bad at dividing the cake..."
V*ikram: "Ok I think everyone is getting really hungry...Hahahaha."
Then comes A*bidah the expert in cake dividing:

And then V*ikram got the Indian management trainees to sing me the Indian Birthday song when he realised the chinese one has the same tune as the English one. And up came numerous versions of Happy Birthdays in Indian.
Me: "Why are there so many versions?!"
V*ikram: "You have any idea HOW MANY people are there in India?"
Me: "HAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAH!"
Thanks Revenue Mgmt for the wonderful cake and V*ikram for the superb lunch!
*my dark rings look so bad! No wonder I get chased out of office everyday =S*
Thanks to everyone in the office for the nice birthday song!:

Thanks to every other friend who left a message in my handphone (too many le but you know who you are!)

Thanks to those who left a message on my tagboard (Shaun, Wee Cheer, Phyl and Chris Zhuo) =D
Thanks to pa and ma for the good pork ribs dinner I came home to =D
Now, let me go thank everyone who left a message on my Facebook for the last few hours:

I think I need about an hour. But still, thanks everyone!
