Tubular Bells

This musical piece was mentioned multiple times in the first few chapters of my current read - "Losing my Virginity", an autobiography of Richard Branson. So I decided to pop by Youtube and try to understand this track that helped its record label made money many years on, even when the composer himself retreated away from the limelight.

I got to say this. I was blown away by the track:

Just a note: It has no lyrics and its 48 minutes long (there's a middle portion where there's a voice explaining the name of instruments behind). You could call it a totally unconventional piece of music in a time period where The Sex Pistols and The Rolling Stones dominated the music scene. There isn't even a specific genre for Tubular Bells, because he has seamlessly pieced together so many different genres into this piece.

It was composed by Mike Oldfield when he was 19 years old (in the 1970s), frustrated with being a backup guitar and desperately wanted to launch his own album. Virgin Records, at that time was the newest kid on the block and wanted to sign their next big thing.

The collaboration was a match made in heaven I guess.

How can a 19 year old play so many instruments (every single instrument utilized in the piece was played by Mike Oldfield himself and overlapped multiple times to create the end product)? How is it possible a 19 year old mind can be full of so many melodies??

No idea but man this was such an amazing work of art. And if you find the opening track (first 4 minutes or so) familiar, it's actually the opening theme of the famous original The Exorcist (1973). The reason why it became the opening theme of the movie was because Mike Oldfield had been too overwhelmed by the level of fame he reached with his first album and decided he never wanted to perform live again. He retreated into the outskirts of London and there was no way Virgin Records (or Richard Branson for that matter) could persuade him otherwise. In order to distribute this piece to the USA, the record label packaged it with the movie (since it has no music video or any lyrics to go with it) and bam the rest is history.

Give the track a go, you won't regret it!

LOTR - The Two Towers

I'm a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings - although I admit that I tried (and failed terribly) at trying to read the great works of J.R.R Tolkien.

Went for the performance of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers orchestral performance by the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, Vocal Associates Festival Chorus and Children's Choir yesterday.

It played the complete recordings of The Two Towers over 3 full hours against a big screen playing the movie with the same name. Magic. Pure magic, right from the very first note that hit the theatre when the New Line Cinema introduction appeared on the screen. Absolute chills.

I have a favourite piece from the complete recordings of The Two Towers: One of the Dunedain. And man did it gave me goosebumps last night when that piece was being played, in line with the movie scenes. Second part of this piece, known as "Evenstar" in the OST is definitely the best part of the piece.

"If Aragorn survives this war, you will still be parted. If Sauron is defeated, and Aragorn made king and all that you hope for comes true, you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality. Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die. And there will be no comfort for you - No comfort to ease the pain of his passing. He will come to death, an image of the splendour of the kings of men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world.... But YOU, my daughter, you will linger on in darkness and in doubt, as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to your grief, under the fading trees, until all the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent."

So hauntingly beautiful :)

I hope they come back with The Return of the King next year! :)

Phantom of the Opera - Singapore

There are beautiful amazing things in life. And there is watching Phantom of the Opera live. To me, they are kinda the same thing. It's such a classic that it's hard to find anyone who's not familiar with that signature opening piece of the famed musical. Anyhows, familiar or not, chills will definitely run down your spine the moment the orchestra starts up the first note of the Overture.

That's the magic of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber I guess. It has been 27 years since it first opened at West End London in 1986. The musical has gone down in history as the longest running show ever and has chalked up a box office of around US5$5.6 billion worldwide. No matter how many times you read about it, or watched the big screen adaptations, nothing quite compare to watching it live.

My first brush with Phantom of the Opera was it's orchestra score. There was once our band conductor contemplated the piece for our school performance. As a usual practice, we would download a full album of the piece and listen to it to death. Bam! I was hooked. It went on loop for months although eventually we didn't play it.

When I know Phantom of the Opera was coming to Singapore, you have no idea how excited I was. This is the third time the musical hit our tiny shores and I'm extremely grateful/happy that I'm no longer a poor student/undergrad and can finally afford to go!

My original ticket to the show on an earlier date was rendered pointless as I had to be in China for work. To think I went through so much efforts in securing them before it was released to the public! But anyhows, I'm glad my friends enjoyed it on my behalf :) My new friend from Mount KK thought that I was too pitiful and decided to take me to the show last Saturday. Thank you new friend! :)

No photography allowed so all photos are grabbed from internet.

I've 'watched' the musical a few times (thank you Youtube) but nothing prepares me for a live one. I wasn't just impressed, I was completely blown away. It seized me in such a manner that I was left choked up even after I left the theater. The last time I was this choked up watching the musical was the 25th Anniversary celebration for Phantom of the Opera at West End in 2011 - oh Ramin Karimloo! But that's another post for another day...

The musical is based on Gaston Leroux's French gothic novel Le Fantome de l'Opera. The story centres upon a hideous but musically gifted magician who lives deep below the fictitious Opera Populaire (which is based on the Paris Opera House). He is deeply in love with the beautiful soprano Christine Daae. Ashamed of his much feared appearance, he posed as the Angel of Music/Phantom of the Opera, coaching Christine into the star he believes she is and in return hopes she will fall in love with him. Unaware of her feelings towards her childhood friend, Raoul, the Phantom's obsession with Christine sets the stage for for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and immense passion collides.

"But do you love me? If Erik were good-looking, would you love me Christine?" - Gaston Leroux, Phantom of the Opera.

Yes, the Phantom has a name - he's called Erik.

Grand opulent stage settings, intricate costumes, breathtaking melodies and powerful vocal cords are expected of each Phantom of the Opera performance - that's why the production performs to sell-outs across 151 cities (30 countries).  Sometimes I wonder if they ever have problems selling tickets.

Brad Little as Phantom and Claire Lyon as Christine

Brad Little is amazing as Phantom. After all, he's one of the only 4 men in the world to have done this role for over 2,200 times! I've watched a few Phantoms before (on Youtube that is), he's definitely up on list as one of my favourite men behind the mask (besides John Owen-James and Ramin Karimloo). He brings the right amount of anger and tenderness. One moment suave and confident in seducing Christine with his heavenly voice, another a raging pitch perfect madman.

If you ever wonder or had a moment of doubt as to the possibility of Christine falling for a facially deformed and deranged Phantom, Brad Little cleared that all the moment he hits the first note. His delivery of Music of the Night was a haunting balance of charm, tenderness and longing. Like Christine, the entire full house of audience was completely seduced.

The iconic boat scene was breathtaking, seeing the stage transform before my eyes was just magical! Another favourite of mine would be the seductive number - Point of No Return. Who would have thought an erotic emotion could be sung in such a classy way?

Claire Lyon as the talented but naive Christine was brilliant as well. Her rendition of Think of Me as she transformed from a shy chorus girl to confident lead in the number definitely gave me some serious goosebumps.

The scene of the Final Lair - where the Phantom kidnapped Christine out of desperation, to marry him in his lair, still gets me no matter how many times I watched it.  His final plead to be loved, to be accepted. When he was struggling and Christine was trying to appease him by saying the true deformity lies in his empty soul and not his disfigured face. When he was unmasked and left with the final nothingness, when he sang "Masquerade, paper faces on parade. Hide your face, so the world will never find you". Oh my uncontrollable tears!

Younger days Andrew Lloyd Webber with Sarah Brightman, and the very first Phantom, Michael Crawford

One of the most amazing thing about the musical is despite 27 years on, the piece doesn't feel dated. The music is still mesmerizing, the plot still attracting sell-outs from all over the world. I guess everyone will always love a good love story. Especially one that holds the hidden love story behind this epic musical - the romance and now-over marriage of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and the very first Christine, Sarah Brightman. It was mentioned he wanted to write a romantic piece for the first time in his career as he felt the overwhelming love he had for his Angel of Music. I remembered an old interview where Webber mentioned that sometimes he felt like he's the Phantom, with not so great looks but amazing musical talents, seeking the love of a beautiful soprano (i.e Brightman) by trying his very best to make her a star. And yes she did become an international star after the musical hit Broadway (and how Webber had refused to bring the show over to the States unless Brightman gets to play Christine). Sigh. I guess most of us are just hopeless romantics deep down inside, wanting to be loved and accepted despite our flaws. The Phantom clearly appeals to that side of us!

The entire musical is gorgeous, enchanting and well-performed by an outstanding cast. I was left with so much emotions I refused to leave the theater until I was asked to by one of the ushers as they had to clear the area.

It's so good I've persuaded my sister to accept tickets as my birthday present to her - nothing like celebrating the big 3-0 with Phantom of the Opera live! There isn't many seats left and the show has to close 1st September (extended with 8 additional shows due to sell-out for earlier dates!) so do grab your tickets quickly if you want to catch them!

I shall end this post with the cast without the make-up - from left: Brad Little (Phantom), Claire Lyon (Christine) and Raoul (Anthony Downing).

Phantom really doesn't look so bad! :) Look at that cheeky grin!

Extremely psyched I'm going to catch it again next Wednesday! :)))

Paint my love

Old is still gold.

Les Miserables - Fight. Dream. Hope. Love.

I have not watched the musical before (in real at least) so I can't judge much, less make a good comparison. I've read about the tragic lives of those that resides in the famous work of Victor Hugo, listened endlessly to the famous tunes of their successful musical, like One Day More, I Dreamed a Dream and Do You Hear the People Sing?, but nothing quite prepared me for the awe I felt throughout the full 158 minutes of the film.

I love how the movie stayed true to the musical (Ok I watched the 25th anniversary performance on Youtube haha) - no additional fluff, no additional scenes. What made the movie better (in this sense only), was the beautiful settings and majestic scenes as compared to just props on a musical stage. It does provide a more wholesome experience.

Anne Hathaway was amazing as Fantine, her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream made me tear. Her desperation as a mum who needed money for her child, her anger of being treated shabbily as the lower levels of the society and the painful disappointment of how life had turned out, were all beautifully played out in that single tune. It was so heartbreaking to hear it will be hard not to feel your heart wrench. Eddie Redmayne as Marius was terribly romantic and there were moments I wished he could walk out from the screen. Hahaha. He did an extremely emotional version of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables which left me in tears too (but let's not compare against Michael Ball's version at the 10th anniversary performance).

I guess I expected much more from Hugh Jackman (as Jean Valjean) so his performance didn't really surprise me. I did felt that he had some misses along the way (like a way too emotional Confrontation). It's an expectation thing I guess. Russell Crowe as Javert wasn't as bad as what most reviews wrote. He probably had the least musical background among the lot and I would give it to him for the effort.

Of course Masters of the House wasn't as playful as it was portrayed in the musical, but Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Carter as the Thenardiers were so cute they easily stole the show. Samantha Barks (who also played Eponine in the 25th anniversary performance of Les Miserables) made me cry again with her On My Own

Just a really small nugget of information - the Bishop in the movie who saved Jean Valjean - is the first Jean Valjean in the 1985's West End production of Les Miserables!

Similar to the musical, the movie ended with a an extremely moving rendition of  One Day More/Do You Hear the People Sing? (Okay fine the movie ended with Bring Him Home/Do You Hear the People Sing? lol). It gave me the chills man.
"Will you join in our crusades? Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricades, is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing? Say, do you hear the distant drums.
It is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes!
Tomorrow comes!"
Overall, I cried many a times, although silently. You know, just in case someone thinks I'm crazy. Hahaha. I wished I watched with a more appreciative crowd though, this dude sitting in front of me kept switching on his phone to play games and it was annoying the hell out of me. The conclusion is, while it is being brought into the cinema for the general public, it is still not the kind of movie that is a one size fit all. If you are not into musicals, the movie is likely to bore you to death. Like the above-mentioned dude. Hurhur.

It may be a film with the occasional flaw but this is such a difficult musical masterpiece to replicate for a movie setting. I'll still give it a perfect 10 and yes I will be back for seconds, and maybe thirds :)

Jersey Boys

Going to catch them tonight! Cannot wait :)

/updated post/

I love Jersey Boys. Such a talented cast.

Besides knowing it's about the rise and fall of one of the most successful rock and roll band of the 60s, The Four Seasons, I have no idea what to expect for the musical. For more details, do read this :)

With no expectations, you could say I had many pleasant surprises along the way! If you love oldies, you will definitely love Jersey Boys. If you don't like oldies, I'm pretty sure you will be in love with this genre by the end of the show ;-). The crowd that I enjoyed the Tuesday show with were mostly above 35 year olds. Le sigh, I wish more youngsters would come! Or maybe they will all be in the weekend shows :)

The biggest surprise had to be Can't Take My Eyes Off You! Who would have thought they were the original writers and singers of this classic! Personally, I love Sherry too.

For all those who haven't caught it yet, please do! If you get tickets now (from category A to C, you get a free upgrade for your tickets! Offer till January 2013 :)

Think no more, just book now! :)

Les Miserables

Omg it's already December. Where did the year go to!?

That aside, I can't wait for Les Miserables movie! :) Will update when work isn't this hectic!

Little Things

I never thought this day will come. But I've actually fallen in love with One Direction's latest song - Little Things.

Your hands fits in mine like it's made just for me
But bear this mind it was meant to be
And I'm joining up the dots with the freckles on your cheeks
And it all makes sense to me

I know you've never loved the crinkles by your eyes when you smile,
You've never loved your stomach or your thighs
The dimples in your back at the bottom of your spine
But I'll love them endlessly

I won't let this little things slip out of my mouth
But if I do, it's you, oh it's you, they add up to
I'm in love with you and all these little things

You can't go to bed without a cup of tea
Maybe that's the reason that you talk in your sleep
And all those conversations are the secrets that I keep
Though it makes no sense to me

I know you've never loved the sound of your voice on tape
You never want to know how much you weigh
You still have to squeeze into your jeans
But you're perfect to me

I won't let these little things slip out of my mouth
But if it's true, it's you, it's you, they add up to
I'm in love with you and all these little things

You never love yourself half as much as I love you
You'll never treat yourself right darling but I want you to
If I let you know, I'm here for you
Maybe you'll love yourself like I love you oh

I've just let these little things slip out of my mouth
Because it's you, oh it's you, it's you they add up to
And I'm in love with you (all these little things)
I won't let these little things slip out of my mouth
But if it's true, it's you, it's you they add up to
I'm in love with you, and all your little things.

No wonder they say never say never :)

Current Addiction: Secret Garden

You know you have to watch a certain Korean drama when 2 of your male friends insist you do. To put things in perspective, they were never the kind who even had the time to catch anything remotely close to awesome shows like How I Met Your Mother or Big Bang Theory. Ok scrap that, they don't even watch TV or shows of any sorts. Hahaha.

Anyway, back to the show. Secret Garden is pretty much your usual Korean drama - dashing rich perfect male lead and your poor righteous pretty female lead. Guy meets girl, guy falls in love with her. Him being rich and all, never understood poverty and in his bids to make her life better, it just made it seemed like he looks down on her. You know the usual.

It has however, a little bit of twist to the storyline. After each consumed a bottle of flower wine purchased from a weird lady who resides in a dingy restaurant in the middle of nowhere called Secret/Mystery Garden - their souls would swap every time there's a rainstorm. And that's when the fun begins. Another plus point would be the female lead is not your usual frail princessy "I need to be rescuedddddd!" girly girl. In the show, she's a stunt woman who has quite a bit of a feisty temper and tolerates no nonsense when it came to her career and her dignity.

I admit I was a little turned off by the storyline when it first aired in 2010 and hence was not caught in the entire Secret Garden storm back then. 9 episodes on now in 2012 and I can safely say, I totally understood why it had the highest viewership that year. The plot is amazingly seamless, and the lines are so so classic. Although the main storyline is predictable (meaning I presume it's going to be a happy ending), the scriptwriters still manage to throw in some surprises every episode ;)

Most importantly, come on, who can resist Hyun Bin, especially when he's in a 3-piece suit ;-)

The OST is beautiful as well. My favourite thus far has to be the one sang by Hyun Bin - "That Man". I remember hearing it a few years back and never knew who sang it and what it meant. Man, the lyrics are soooooooo good.

Okay time to go to bed :) Super long day tomorrow! Good night world :) xoxo

Gangnam Style

Never thought I will put this under Music category hahaha. I'm not sure if you have heard this song or watched this video yet. If you haven't, I recommend that you give it a go. I'm pretty sure you will be quite addicted to it.

I've watched about 20 times and it still makes me laugh!

Gangnam (south of Han River) is an affluent area in South Korea. Gangnam style kinda mean rich and have the ability to spend. Oppa means older brother in Korean, ladies also use it to address their boyfriends. Putting them words "Oppa Gangnam style" together kinda mean "hey, your big brother here is rich/sophisticated".

Lyrics:

Oppa is Gangnam style
Gangnam style

A girl who is warm and human during the day
A classy girl who knows how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes
A girl with that kind of twist

I'm a guy
A guy who is as warm as you during the day
A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down
A guy whose heart bursts when night comes
That kind of guy

**
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let's go until the end

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh-Sexy lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh-Sexy lady oh oh oh oh

A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensible girl like that

I'm a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy

Repeats **

On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I'm a man who knows a thing or two
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I'm a man who knows a thing or two

You know what I'm saying
Oppa is Gangnam style

I believe in you

If I have to name my favourite singer, it has to be Celine Dion. Talents aside, I think she has an amazing attitude towards life and definitely adversities. Yes, I have an unexplainable attraction to people with outstandingly positive attitude towards life. Hurhur.

Listening to "I believe in you" by Il Divo and Celine Dion uplifts my mood every single time. Always feel like I'm ready to conquer the world after putting it on repeat mode for hours. Haha.

" Life imposes things on you that you can't control, but you still have the choice of how you are going to live through it" - Celine Dion.

Call me maybe?

In October 2011, Abercrombie & Fitch discovered Carly Rae's "Call me maybe" and launched the song on its official soundtrack. To celebrate the song's summer popularity, A&F asked its hottest guys from its Flagship stores all around the world to have fun with the song and film it on their phones.

Now this is the product:

Scrap that, make that call you definitely. Hahaha.

We are young

Finally someone sings about life, and not sex. Haha

Tonight, we are young.
So let's set the world on fire,
We can burn brighter than the sun.

The One That Got Away

Amazing cover

Someone Like You

I heard that you're settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you

Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me, it isn't over

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me, it isn't over yet

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead, yeah

Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don't forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I begged, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

Waiting

Favourite report writing track.

Happy :)

Stereo Love

Call me slow. But I've only recently heard this piece. And man I'm like totally in love with it.

Don't ask me why but it puts my mind and my entire being in a trance-like kind of peaceful state. Me loves it very much.

I've listened to it the ENTIRE day and man I was so darn productive today. Hahaha

Sara Bareilles

She's so good. Like really really good. Her interaction with the crowd, her live performance, her talents. Wow.

To be very honest, before I went for her concert, I barely knew much about her. I only liked one of her songs - King of Anything. The BF is a huge fan so I figured I might as well go and see how good she is.

Man was I blown away. The concert was a sold out one in Esplanade and she is such an awesome live performer!

Awesome pieces!

If she comes back again, I'm definitely going one more time =D

Unwritten

Totally on repeat mode :)

"Unwritten"

I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined
I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, oh, oh

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, yeah, yeah

Most awesome song before the end of 2010

I've gotta admit. I'm really addicted to this song.

Just that I shouldn't be singing it out randomly.
