Phantom of the Opera - Singapore

There are beautiful amazing things in life. And there is watching Phantom of the Opera live. To me, they are kinda the same thing. It's such a classic that it's hard to find anyone who's not familiar with that signature opening piece of the famed musical. Anyhows, familiar or not, chills will definitely run down your spine the moment the orchestra starts up the first note of the Overture.

That's the magic of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber I guess. It has been 27 years since it first opened at West End London in 1986. The musical has gone down in history as the longest running show ever and has chalked up a box office of around US5$5.6 billion worldwide. No matter how many times you read about it, or watched the big screen adaptations, nothing quite compare to watching it live.

My first brush with Phantom of the Opera was it's orchestra score. There was once our band conductor contemplated the piece for our school performance. As a usual practice, we would download a full album of the piece and listen to it to death. Bam! I was hooked. It went on loop for months although eventually we didn't play it.

When I know Phantom of the Opera was coming to Singapore, you have no idea how excited I was. This is the third time the musical hit our tiny shores and I'm extremely grateful/happy that I'm no longer a poor student/undergrad and can finally afford to go!

My original ticket to the show on an earlier date was rendered pointless as I had to be in China for work. To think I went through so much efforts in securing them before it was released to the public! But anyhows, I'm glad my friends enjoyed it on my behalf :) My new friend from Mount KK thought that I was too pitiful and decided to take me to the show last Saturday. Thank you new friend! :)

No photography allowed so all photos are grabbed from internet.

I've 'watched' the musical a few times (thank you Youtube) but nothing prepares me for a live one. I wasn't just impressed, I was completely blown away. It seized me in such a manner that I was left choked up even after I left the theater. The last time I was this choked up watching the musical was the 25th Anniversary celebration for Phantom of the Opera at West End in 2011 - oh Ramin Karimloo! But that's another post for another day...

The musical is based on Gaston Leroux's French gothic novel Le Fantome de l'Opera. The story centres upon a hideous but musically gifted magician who lives deep below the fictitious Opera Populaire (which is based on the Paris Opera House). He is deeply in love with the beautiful soprano Christine Daae. Ashamed of his much feared appearance, he posed as the Angel of Music/Phantom of the Opera, coaching Christine into the star he believes she is and in return hopes she will fall in love with him. Unaware of her feelings towards her childhood friend, Raoul, the Phantom's obsession with Christine sets the stage for for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and immense passion collides.

"But do you love me? If Erik were good-looking, would you love me Christine?" - Gaston Leroux, Phantom of the Opera.

Yes, the Phantom has a name - he's called Erik.

Grand opulent stage settings, intricate costumes, breathtaking melodies and powerful vocal cords are expected of each Phantom of the Opera performance - that's why the production performs to sell-outs across 151 cities (30 countries).  Sometimes I wonder if they ever have problems selling tickets.

Brad Little as Phantom and Claire Lyon as Christine

Brad Little is amazing as Phantom. After all, he's one of the only 4 men in the world to have done this role for over 2,200 times! I've watched a few Phantoms before (on Youtube that is), he's definitely up on list as one of my favourite men behind the mask (besides John Owen-James and Ramin Karimloo). He brings the right amount of anger and tenderness. One moment suave and confident in seducing Christine with his heavenly voice, another a raging pitch perfect madman.

If you ever wonder or had a moment of doubt as to the possibility of Christine falling for a facially deformed and deranged Phantom, Brad Little cleared that all the moment he hits the first note. His delivery of Music of the Night was a haunting balance of charm, tenderness and longing. Like Christine, the entire full house of audience was completely seduced.

The iconic boat scene was breathtaking, seeing the stage transform before my eyes was just magical! Another favourite of mine would be the seductive number - Point of No Return. Who would have thought an erotic emotion could be sung in such a classy way?

Claire Lyon as the talented but naive Christine was brilliant as well. Her rendition of Think of Me as she transformed from a shy chorus girl to confident lead in the number definitely gave me some serious goosebumps.

The scene of the Final Lair - where the Phantom kidnapped Christine out of desperation, to marry him in his lair, still gets me no matter how many times I watched it.  His final plead to be loved, to be accepted. When he was struggling and Christine was trying to appease him by saying the true deformity lies in his empty soul and not his disfigured face. When he was unmasked and left with the final nothingness, when he sang "Masquerade, paper faces on parade. Hide your face, so the world will never find you". Oh my uncontrollable tears!

Younger days Andrew Lloyd Webber with Sarah Brightman, and the very first Phantom, Michael Crawford

One of the most amazing thing about the musical is despite 27 years on, the piece doesn't feel dated. The music is still mesmerizing, the plot still attracting sell-outs from all over the world. I guess everyone will always love a good love story. Especially one that holds the hidden love story behind this epic musical - the romance and now-over marriage of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and the very first Christine, Sarah Brightman. It was mentioned he wanted to write a romantic piece for the first time in his career as he felt the overwhelming love he had for his Angel of Music. I remembered an old interview where Webber mentioned that sometimes he felt like he's the Phantom, with not so great looks but amazing musical talents, seeking the love of a beautiful soprano (i.e Brightman) by trying his very best to make her a star. And yes she did become an international star after the musical hit Broadway (and how Webber had refused to bring the show over to the States unless Brightman gets to play Christine). Sigh. I guess most of us are just hopeless romantics deep down inside, wanting to be loved and accepted despite our flaws. The Phantom clearly appeals to that side of us!

The entire musical is gorgeous, enchanting and well-performed by an outstanding cast. I was left with so much emotions I refused to leave the theater until I was asked to by one of the ushers as they had to clear the area.

It's so good I've persuaded my sister to accept tickets as my birthday present to her - nothing like celebrating the big 3-0 with Phantom of the Opera live! There isn't many seats left and the show has to close 1st September (extended with 8 additional shows due to sell-out for earlier dates!) so do grab your tickets quickly if you want to catch them!

I shall end this post with the cast without the make-up - from left: Brad Little (Phantom), Claire Lyon (Christine) and Raoul (Anthony Downing).

Phantom really doesn't look so bad! :) Look at that cheeky grin!

Extremely psyched I'm going to catch it again next Wednesday! :)))

Long weekend

Nothing beats ending the week with an extremely long weekend - Thursday being Hari Raya Puasa and Friday (today) being National Day! Happy Birthday Singapore! :)

I did promise myself I will sleep more this weekend but it hasn't materialize yet. Woke up early on Thursday morning to help my friend with his new business - basic data management tips got me a free lunch! I should do this more often. Haha.

Started Friday morning at the Princely Treasures Exhibition, currently held at National Museum of Singapore. It's free so pop by if you can make it.

Now time to go finish work so I can enjoy the remaining 2 days of the long weekend!

3,4 and 5

So after 3 hours of flight delay (where we were sitting in the plane waiting for what felt like eternity), 4 inflight movies and 5 hours of flight time, I managed to get myself in one piece back to Singapore.

At 3.30am in the morning.

I'm sitting in the office now, exhausted beyond words. Clearly 4 cups of coffee can only do this much.

Not sure how I'm going to make it through the Bahasa Indonesian class tonight but I'll try!

Hello there!

5 days in Xiamen, 1 day in Shanghai and 2nd day in Suzhou - finally at the last leg of my corporate travel! Other than the crazy heat (it's 38 degrees today but really feels more like 45), Suzhou is a delightful city to be in.

Turning in early now so I can gym and go for early meeting tomorrow.

Good night world :) Hope your week as been as amazing as mine :)

Counting down

to a variety of things!

8 more hours to office's bi-weekly TGIF;
10 more hours to Pacific Rim in 3D; and
30 more hours to Mount Kinabalu.

It's going to be a rocking (long) weekend ahead!

And it's only 9.16am. So.. it's back to work for now. Awesome Friday + weekend to all! :)

Conclusion of the day

I took a day off to shop around for my hiking gear (I am so last minute it's worrying hahahaha). The end result is a 40L hiking bag (Gregory!). Yes, that's the only thing I bought after shopping the whole day. It's a little pricey after some price comparisons but it's really light weight and the quality stood out. Since having my backpack disintegrate while hiking/climbing is not a priority on my list, I decided to pay that little premium.

At least there's motivation to climb/hike more in future! It's all about the returns on investment man.

Terribly exhausted now as well since all these camping/hiking/climbing gear shops are always at some secluded corners of Waterloo Street or Beach Road. Best part? I lost my way so many times despite using Google Navigation.

Conclusion of the day: I seriously suck at this activity call shopping and also an app called Google Maps.

Sunset Bay

Sunset Bay Bistro at East Coast Park (ECP).

It's one of those places in ECP that marked various events in my life. Key resting spot when I come here to skate. Favourite spot for people watching. One of my most memorable relationship started here. And also ended here.

Spent the afternoon with that someone who started and ended that relationship with me. 3 years ago I was very much an emotional mess, that skating past this bistro was an upsetting experience. 3 years later (actually it was very much earlier on), we have moved on from that "Yeah right, we can still be friends" awkward phase. Caught up with each other on our current lives, had a good laugh and dig over the relationship we left behind and discussed in depth about the various options to my future career path.

Ah, nothing like truly knowing you have been liberated from past :)

H2 2013

June is over before I even knew it started.

So that half year mark has passed :) I didn't set too many goals for myself at the beginning of the year. After getting rid of an emotional draining boss and ending a mid-term relationship (since it ain't short or long enough hehz), all I had wished for myself was to be a better person, and to walk out of all that doom and gloom of 2012. Ok fine, looking back it wasn't THAT bad. Reminder to self: things always feels worse when you are in them, and it is what it is, just a feeling. ;)

In the last 6 months, I stopped taking a sarcastic dig at my ex-boss (even when I had a chance to while chilling with the ex co folks), moved on from my last relationship (you can tell when you are neutral even hanging out with a group of friends with him), completed Sundown 21.1km, started travelling for work, fought for better opportunities in office, attended many investment conferences, made (many) new friends, finished my Elementary Bahasa Indonesia lessons and started on Intermediate, gave gym time priority, got spoiled entirely by friends who took me out to amazing dining places to satisfy my gastronomic desires and hosted a wedding for the first time. I'm pretty sure there's more but my memory is absolutely failing me. As usual.

What the last 6 months taught me was - when you start focusing on the things you want and love to do, all other negativity in your life melts away. It's one of those life lessons you preach endlessly to your friends but sometimes falls short on following it yourself.

At this mid-year checkpoint, I aim to do more for myself, be a better friend, child, team mate and person.

Will be kickstarting my second half of 2013 with a trip to Kota Kinabalu. Off to climb Mount Kinabalu next week! I haven't start packing my bag, so essentially I'm psyched but totally unprepared. So I better get down to buying my hiking shoes tonight and start climbing some stairs in them.

Can't wait to strike off another item off the 2013 to-dos and of course that ever-growing bucket list :)

Onward to an equally (or more) impressive 6 months!

Work in on a Saturday

Stepped back into office post lunch today and found 2 of my team mates already at their work stations. Flash back of consulting days.

Hope everyone got an awesome list of activities lined up for the weekend! Now back to work.

PSI 400

Just when we thought the worst was over until Friday noon-ish, where we actually hit a 3-hour average PSI of 400! That's wayyyyyy beyond hazardous level of PSI 300.

Original:

Crazy PSI:

Photo credits: Friends working around the Marina Bay, CBD and Harbourfront area

The PSI has gone down significantly over the weekend but the PM2.5 particles concentration is still really high. N95 masks were out of stock for the longest time earlier this week and apparently Singapore jammed Amazon's servers over this (doubt it's real but it's pretty funny haha).

Do stay indoors guys! This haze is crazzzzyyy.

PSI: 321

It's official. We have crossed the "very unhealthy" PSI 300 mark and moved on to "hazardous" PSI 321 as of 10pm Singapore time.

That's the highest PSI in Singapore history! We are only 20 points behind Riau, Sumatra. Oh good lord, let there be public holiday tomorrow.

Smoke gets in my eyes

It's that time of the year again - where our dear neighbour (Indonesia) is burning up their forest in Sumatra and we suffer.

Photo credits: Straits Time and friends

The air honestly stinks and it's stifling hot. Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hit 155 yesterday, and that's in the unhealthy range! It's also the worst haze we have seen since 1997.

At least majority of us gets to hide indoors in the comfort of the air-condition. I wonder how the old folks who has no air-con at home going to cope. :(

Oh Friday

Yesterday almost became the most shiteous day of my 2013 (to date) but I'm glad it didn't.

I woke up 1 hour late and started my morning scrambling around for everything. Realized my ezlink bus card was not with me when I reached the bus stop and had to go back home to get it. 3 buses went by o.O. Reached office one hour late (thank god it's Friday and everyone is generally quite relaxed about it) to a bursting mail box and a bunch of work from my intern that I have to vet.

Was chided by an angst-y auntie (with a neck brace) while I was at KFC with my colleagues because we were "making too much noise". In reality, we were just chatting (albeit with a bit too much emotions) about a floating hotel in Sri Lanka. And then I lost my hairband.

By afternoon, I wished the day would end immediately so I can start another one afresh! BAHH.

Thank goodness, the team decided to end the day with an amazing night of bonding at TigerLily (nope it's not a sleazy place) @ Dempsey.

Although I had a less than pleasant start to the day, at least it ended well. Hehehe :)

DOMS

Sign of old age is getting DOMS after trying to run a half marathon without training for it. Hahahaha. DOMS = Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness. Yes there's actually a medical term for soreness after strenuous exercise. It usually occurs within the post-72 hours of said activity.

I've been feeling like a walking bag of broken bones since Saturday morning. Boo. Never doing this kind of distance again without proper long distance training.

On a separate note, just had my official Bahasa Indonesia (Elementary) paper yesterday. Pretty confident I'm going to pass. Cross fingers!

Oh dengue

Day 2 of low grade fever and I'm supposed to watch out for rashes by tomorrow or Thursday. No rash, no dengue.

My CEO is down with dengue. Doy. My analyst's dad is also down with dengue. Double doy. Hope everyone get well soon.

Medz kicking in and the figures in my financial model ain't making sense anymore. Good night world and stay safe!

Swarmed

Work has been extremely busy. My new intern just joined us this week and I have yet to dream up things for him to do. Oh to think managing interns was supposed to be fun - you know like lording over people and stuff! Hahaha. But I need to structure things for him to be involved in and observe if he's actually doing a good job, whether he's enjoying them et cetera. Steve started his stint with us last week and we have been working many hours together trying to get him up to speed as fast as we can.

I'm grabbing a bigger portfolio now in the name of exposure. Cross-working with various departments and also working on some business development leads for my CFO. Office life is FINALLY getting super busy and satisfying the way I want it to be. I've always been someone who's afraid of a mundane slow work life and I can't be more grateful how things are turning out. Hurhur.

There's going to be many projects coming up so I foresee myself being extremely swarmed. The strange thing is, I can't wait to be. Hahaha. I'm such a sadist.

In other news, my Bahasa Indonesia mock test is in 3 weeks time and final exam in 4 weeks time :O The horror I swear. I'm terribly behind in my revision! Definitely needs to pull Danson out for some full day hardcore studying of sorts.

Ok back to emails and Michael Bolton/Bryan Adams.

Good Saturday

Had an amazing Saturday hanging out with the JC friends and celebrating Shiyuan's birthday over at Zeffir with some seriously good and authentic Russian/Uzbekistan food. Who would have expected such good food in this little hole in the wall in Little India? I sure didn't. Haha. The Borsch soup was rich and is one of the must-trys. I like how cozy and homely the setting is, perfect for small gatherings (the whole place takes about less than 30 people I think). Do try the Kompot (home-made drink made from apple, plums and grapes) and Shashliks too!

I would recommend going with a group of friends so you can order a variety of food to share! :)

Headed off to Tom's Palette for some home-made ice cream thereafter and we managed to embarrass Shiyuan (and ourselves of course) by singing him a birthday song. If you haven't tried their ice cream, you should. It's creamy and extremely flavorful. Not forgetting they have a variety of flavors that you can't find in most cookie-cutter ice cream outlets, like salted egg yolk and and chocolate stout. There's also a workshop you can sign up to make your own ice cream! Students from all local universities get 10% off ;)

This is already the 11th year we are celebrating each other's birthdays. I feel old just thinking about it. Hahaha. It's been an incredible journey for all of us, slogging through A levels, University, overseas stints, work life, love and marriages together. We have been with each other through all the major milestones in each other's lives. It's not an easy feat and I'm glad we are still going strong :)

Cedric will be heading off to Ohio really soon (for his PhD) after his wedding in 2 weeks time. Christmas visiting plans are in the works already! Hahaha. Wendy's plans to study/further her career in Australia is also starting to take shape as well (after her house arrive in September). Jiahui got rid of his crazy boss and is moving on to greener pastures in a month's time. Jonathan's prepping for his wedding too. My new manager is coming in next week and hopefully things will progress for the better in office as well ;) I love how well everything is going for all of us :)))

I ended the night at The Coastal Settlement (gotta go back and try their brunch one of these days). Kenneth came back from Hong Kong for the weekend and we had a hell of a time discussing about his new cafe idea and Kelvin's upcoming stag night in Bangkok (again!). Miss these folks so much lahhh.

Life has been good so far. A lot to give thanks for :) Have a great Sunday everyone :)

Lucky Thursday

I've got to be the luckiest person on this planet earth. With the best kind of friends to boot.

Was heading out to lunch with my friend at her workplace (about a 15 min bus ride away from my office) and I was running terribly late. The bus was delayed and traffic at the main road was badddd. "If someone would give me a lift man." I thought to myself.

Just as I was about to give up and head over to the cab stand, a car pulled over and the driver shouted for me to get in. It was Timothy (and his friend)! HAHAHA. I scurried in and he told me he actually circled the area twice just to be sure it was me standing at the bus stop. Good lord, that cracked me up so hard!

"Do you even know where I plan to go? Hahaha". I asked. "Nope, but I figure I could give you a lift." Nawwwwwwwwww.

:)))))))

Okok I know I'm supposed to be writing about all the wonderful places that I've been gorging myself at. Will write about them soon! I'm a world-class procrastinator, if you haven't realized by now. Hurhur.

Hola!

It's ok guys, I'm still alive. Hurhur :)

I'm currently working on a new blog template so I've lost all motivation to post photos and write about them in this boring one. Hahahaha. I just lose interest in things so quickly. GAH.

I do realized I get more readers daily when I DON"T write that often. Nawww why like that. Clearly disappearance makes the heart grows fonder. Hahaha.

Work is getting crazily busy these few weeks as one of the analysts is leaving and I'm taking over her portfolio. Oh wait did I mention the intern ended his stint with us and I also took over his projects? My boss is leaving in a month's time and my new manager is coming in 2 weeks' time! He's none other than Steve, my direct report back when I was in consulting just 2-3 years ago. World is too small! :D We are going to be in the same department again and rock things out. Like we used to. Hahaha.

So I've also taken over some parts of what my current boss is doing... just so everything gets hand over properly. I sound like I'm taking over the entire department's work. I hinted to my boss I'm not paid well enough for that workload. HAHA. I hope he caught that.

All in all, life has been amazingly kind and generous to me. Mega contentment lah.

Oh you little cutie

I was smiling to my phone this morning on the way to work when I noticed a little boy standing just right in front of me. He was staring up at me, giggling at the same time. I caught his eyes and smiled back, while his face brightened up, he shyly looked away before turning back again.

"Why are you giggling?" I asked, my desire to burst out laughing was almost impossible to hide by now because he was soooooo adorable and I surprised myself by even asking him that. "Because you look happy" he replied before flashing me a big bright smile, with a missing tooth in tow. I laughed, and he laughed too.

Little boy in SOTA shirt, you really made my day. And hopefully, I made yours too :)
